On a warm and sunny afternoon on September 20, 2019, family, friends, teammates, and current members of the women’s soccer team gathered at George Mason Stadium to honor and remember former George Mason University soccer player and track and field team member Stephanie Hancock who tragically passed away on June 29th in a kayaking accident.
Stephanie was a beloved member of the soccer team at Mason from 1997-2001. She was a four-year starter, a co-captain, and scholar-athlete. She is remembered as a steady teammate, an amazing defender, and a beacon of light. After her years at Mason, Stephanie went on to serve 12 years with the United States Secret Service last serving with the Presidential Protective Detail.
After the women’s soccer game that day, a post-match ceremony commemorating Stephanie, along with a permanent bench in her honor was placed adjacent to the north entrance of George Mason Stadium. The plaque reads:
“In Loving Memory of
Stephanie Hancock
George Mason Women’s
Soccer/Track and Field
1997 – 2001”
Our founder Meg was a teammate and close friend of Stephanie. We are so honored to have sponsored the memorial bench to ensure Stephanie’s life and legacy is not forgotten. We want to thank all our supporters and donors for making this possible through their generous donations.
